Make A Splashin Adams County
"A person should go out on the water on a fine day to a small distance from a beautiful shore, if he would see nature really smile."
The quote above, credited to augustus William Hare and Julius Charles Hare in their co-authored book entitled Guesses at Truth, by Two Brothers (1827), epitomizes the reality you'll find in the creeks, streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes of Adams County.
First-time visitors and long-term residents plan on and in our waters, as they make their own spashes of all types - bobbers plopping on quiet inland lakes; anchors dropping on well-known fishing holes; wet walls of water cascading behind buzzing jet skis on manmade lakes; inner-tubes slapping the surface on secret swimming holes; belly floppers flopping from woodsy perches on to cool and deep ponds; and sailboats silently gliding in stiff winds on sun-soaked fresh-water seas, with fantails of foam following for fun.
And that's just during one of our seasons! There are three more where that one came from. You are welcome to make your own kind of splash by presenting your significant outher with a wildflower bouquet, gathered in the springtime fields, when the vibrating colors all vie for attention.
Or prepare an equally colorful arrangement of fall leaves, each one bursting with more breathtaking hues of autumn than the last.
And lest we forget, the stark contrast of wintertime white and sky blue have inspired more than one artist to attemtp to capture the beauty contained within such icy grandeur - with the addition of a deer, a hawk, or a wolf depicting a true touch of nature.
Yes, there are many reasons to enjoy every season in Adams County.
We welcome you to stay and play for the day, the weekend, the week, or a lifetime.

NOW, MORE THAN EVER, KEEP IT LOCAL
Given the current economic crisis our nation is facing, we need to do everything we can to keep as much as possible of our community's collective wealth within our community. This is the time of year that Chamber employees in small communities across the land all
begin to beat a familiar drum. The message sent forth is simple, but important.
The message? Buy Local!
Now, more than ever, it is important to really take this message to heart. And as business community leaders, Chamber members must take a lead role in trumpeting this message. When area residents do their shopping outside of the area, Adams County area retailers are the first to suffer, but it doesn't end there. These business owners and their employees are also consumers. If profits are down at their own store, they in turn will have less money to spend at other stores, reducing the profits of those establishments.
Reduced profits for local businesses result in less money being deposited in local banks, thereby reducing the money available to be loaned (and reinvested) in the community. Businesses that are hit especially hard by out-of-town competition may close, decreasing property values of commercial properties and personal properties alike, leaving less money for public schools, street maintenance, and other public projects and needs. Eventually, the entire local economy, and every local resident's pocketbook, suffers in one way or another.

Not a pretty picture.....
Given the current economic crisis our nation is facing, we need to do everything we can to keep as much as possible of our community's collective wealth within our community. Two important things local business professionals can do to keep consumers
shopping locally are to spread the message of why it is so important and, more importantly, to serve by example. If local businesses expect local residents to buy locally, they must also buy locally. A third thing business owners can do is encourage the use of Adams County Chamber of Commerce & Tourism Area Gift Certificates. Good at Adams County locations, these certificates are available at the Chamber office They are great gifts for valued employees, customers, and business associates and a great way to keep Adams County area dollars in the our area. Remember, now more than ever, we need to be good neighbors to our neighbor businesses. I encourage each business to do what it can to support its neighbors this holiday season and beyond.
